DOC 101 Things You Thought You Knew about the Titanic . . . but Didn't! by Tim Maltin; Eloise Aston in History

Description

Winner of the Pulitzer Prize for History; the definitive biography of Malcolm X. Hailed as "a masterpiece" (San Francisco Chronicle); the late Manning Marable's acclaimed biography of Malcolm X finally does justice to one of the most influential and controversial figures of twentieth-century American history. Filled with startling new information and shocking revelations; Malcolm X unfolds a sweeping story of race and class in America. Reaching into Malcolm's troubled youth; it traces a path from his parents' activism as followers of Marcus Garvey through his own work with the Nation of Islam and rise in the world of black nationalism; and culminates in the never-before-told true story of his assassination. Malcolm X is a stunning achievement; the definitive work on one of our greatest advocates for social change.

Being captivated by the sinking of the Titanic since I first learned about it over 30 years ago; I thought I knew a lot about it. Clearly; totally; and in all other ways wrong!Author Tim Maltin (who also has done a fantastic documentary on the subject) shares his years of research; fact finding; and myth busting in this page turning bundle of entertainment. First-hand accounts; riveting testimony from both the American and British inquiries; and accounts from surviving officers make this a book that any Titanic lover will rarely put down; and then start all over reading it again. I cannot recommend this book enough. If I could give it 6 stars; I would.1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Best Titanic Book EverBy JenniferBest Titanic reading ever (excluding autobiographies written by survivors). I never believed it was built of cheap steel or that the crew on Californian was dismissive of the distress calls. How I hate all those stupid myths. This is what schools and colleges should use to teach about Titanic; not poorly-written school textbooks that use old newspapers (which exaggerate and lie). My children will be home-schooled and this is will on the reading list that I set for them. I am a strong believer in the truth. And I think this book covered the Titanic better than any other.7 of 7 people found the following review helpful. Good easy to read bookBy MystufffMy 10 year old wanted to read a book about the Titanic but all of the books we found were too simplistic or too involved for her. This one had just the right amount of information. She liked reading facts about the Tttanic without getting bogged down in the wording. I recommend it if you're looking for an easy read.
