Obviously you would need many volumes to cover 2000 years adequately. The author did a great job of demonstrating that the charismas were always in the true Church but man has a "way of getting in the way". Will read again.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. The best on this subjectBy Richard B. Pomeroy"What Meaneth This" was the former difinitive work on the subject of Charismatic History through the centuries until this book came along. Hyatt; a church Historian; has dug far deeper and explored more sources. The book has far more breadth than anything that proceeded it. The next thing I would like to see is more depth on each of the groups written of. Yet I highly recommend this book to those who think that the manifiestation of the Holy Spirit died out with the death of the last Apostle.Hyatt has shown how the church remained charismatic through the third century and it was the institutionalization of the church that squeezed out the charismatic elements. From that time onward there remained conflict between grass-roots Christianity; where the Holy Spirit was active; and the institutional church that was uncomfortable with what they could not control. Where ever believers read the Bible for themselves or had the full Gospel preached to them; the Holy Spirit was active. The end notes of the book refer to all of Hyatt's source documents so you can trace back what He says to the people who He was quoting. Hyatt has piqued my interest and I highly recommend his book.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Very revealing of today's Church.By CustomerShows how mega church pastors function in the body of Christ at the direction of God the Holy Spirit. I belong to a Mega Church and understand more of what why my pastor operates as he does.
