Haitian seasonal migration to Cuba is central to narratives about race; national development; and US imperialism in the early twentieth-century Caribbean. Filling a major gap in the literature; this innovative study reconstructs Haitian guestworkers' lived experiences as they moved among the rural and urban areas of Haiti; and the sugar plantations; coffee farms; and cities of eastern Cuba. It offers an unprecedented glimpse into the daily workings of empire; labor; and political economy in Haiti and Cuba. Migrants' efforts to improve their living and working conditions and practice their religions shaped migration policies; economic realities; ideas of race; and Caribbean spirituality in Haiti and Cuba as each experienced US imperialism.

It is a hardback; which for $29.99 is definitely not over priced and well within the range I'd pay for any other novel in hardback form. The description is accurate; it gives a nice biography; a lot of quotes; a listing of notable achievements; and the pictures are just lovely. The book is intended to be a celebration of Obama's legacy; but the writing was well done and felt very objective; sometimes mentioning President Obama's decisions and actions garnered him criticism. It's not meant to be a full-blown detailed history; but it does a great job of covering the spectrum. The paper in the book is definitely a "thicker" feel...not sure how to describe it; but much better than a regular old fiction hardback though. Whatever it is; definitely a step-up from the standard. The cover is a matte finish which looks very nice with the dark blue and gold lettering. The print/image quality I'd give an 9/10; I think the images could have been a tad sharper; though this might be just a personal opinion. Last; but not least; charity organizations such as Feeding America that focus on childhood hunger are near and dear to my heart; so I'm extra happy that this book was made to help raise funds for such a worthy and often underappreciated cause.3 of 3 people found the following review helpful.
