Primary Source CompliationBy Ansen PlopbundleThis two volume work (of which I'm only finished with this one at this point) is probably better meant for a personal library or someone really interested in the religious aspects of the U. S. And by really interested I meany ready to see for yourself firsthand accounts - i.e. - primary sources. It's 600 pages or so; so it's very thorough. It's approach is what I would call historical and responsible; trying to adequately represent mostly a myriad of Christian sources. I was expecting more on Mormonism (not sure I remember reading any at all about it - though I could be wrong); though there are some other new religious movements in here.Anyway; that's basically it. Each chapter is divided up into time periods or by specific events (Civil War; Revolutionary War; etc.). Within that; the editors include a wide range of voices with a brief introduction upon each new author or piece. At the end of each chapter the editors include a lengthy list of additional reading material should it greatly interest you.3 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Not what I expectedBy DougI began researching my family tree a few years ago and discovered that my ancestors began to arrive nearly 400 years ago. In at least one case junior was thrown out of his father's house for developing radical religious views; he was a Puritan. I was curious to know why. The pastor at our church recommended this book.For my purposes; I have been disappointed. The book does gather together and quote many interesting primary sources but I was looking for a more detailed summary of what the colonists believed; and why their father's disowned them for believing it. Letters written between two Congregationalist ministers isn't what I had in mind.
