It also demonstrates the belligerence of the major powers of the time. Insights into relations with native peoples; the hardships of pioneer life; the dangers of sea travel; and the capriciousness of the backers of the various colonization ventures. It also demystifies the "Lost Colony." Some trailers and teasers about the Roanoke colony point out the mysterious word "Croatoan" carved in a tree. No mystery at all. The venture's leader told the colonists that if they moved from the their current location while he was doing business back in England; they were to carve the name of where they were going into a tree. Croatoan was the name of a nearby island and of a native group inhabiting the area who was friendly with the settlers. Apparently the settlers moved on to where food and provisions were more readily available and likely protection; too. The settlers were also left on their own for much longer than anticipated when their leader was unable to finance a return trip with supplies and reinforcements. Were they assimilated into the native culture; intermarrying and starting new lives? Possibly. That is still uncertain. This is indeed a brief and tragic history of the Roanoke colony filled with information but not answers.1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Fascinating ReadBy William G. The author tells the story of the colony in the broader context of the battles between Spain and Great Britain to colonize the New World; bring riches back home and find a short-cut to the Far East. Also; he illustrates the religious battles in Europe - highlighted by Spain's attempt to conquer Great Britain and install a Catholic monarch.
