French Text The plates in these two book effectively reproduce 2600 color gouaches of the uniforms of Napoleon's Guard à Pied and Guard à Cheval. Charmy's reputation led to his being one of the major uniform advisors to Abel Gance when he was making his famous movie; Napoleon. The Guard à Pied is here depicted in locations such as Russia and Waterloo as well as in static poses. There are also many plates depicting details of insignia; flags and other uniform detail; right down to horse equipment. Charmy's fine ability as a uniformologist and an artist were first presented in book form in the precursor to this volume on the Cavalry. Three further volumes will follow to complete this set.

A beautiful insight into the search for truth in our own stories.By Ross D.This book is a wonderful memoir of growing up in Israel in the 60s and 70s. The author then adds complexity upon complexity when she meets a Palestinian new mom in the early 90s in California and they confront their own respective narratives. As Noa Baum describes her journey she weaves a beautiful insight into our own biases and perspectives of the middle east conflict. I highly recommend this book.2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. A wonderful book!By Rob ValenteThis was an engaging book that I found hard to put down. The author is a storyteller; and her written voice is clear; direct; and pulls you right into the narrative of her life. The memoir is built out of many well-thought-out set pieces related to moments and periods in her life; all stitched together in a book that is more than a memoir. Her reflections on the importance of all of us learning to listen to each other's stories had a profound impact on me. She is dealing with one of the most intransigent conflicts of our time; yet she convinces me that we all have the capacity to learn each other's hearts and live with each other in peace. I am grateful for the hope she offers and the fears that she encourages us to overcome. A wonderful book!1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Opening Our Mind to "The Other."By Edward S. WolffLand Twice Promised is an outstanding book; or as they say in today's vernacular; "awesome." I wish I could write about all the nuances; issues; life experiences; etc. that came to my mind; but it would take me hours to do so!The author's struggle with personal identity vs. understanding the "other" was poignant. Her relationship with her mother brought thoughts of my relationship with my father. Noa Baum's recognition of the need to create space in her heart and mind to think of more that what was told her was an excellent example for all of us.I have one observation I will make with brief detail. The author knew in her mind and heart the depth of her roots. I do not have that as a gift. I moved five times before college and at least six times afterward. Yes; all moves were in this country; but there are so many cultures within our nation; it is more difficult to recognize your roots unless you remain in one place -- and that excludes your ethnic roots. Her book helped me to understand that.I deeply appreciated her gift of writing and sharing her life. It's been very thought-provoking.
