A Soldier's Recollections

ePub A Soldier's Recollections by Randolph H. McKim in History

Description

Another solid work of history from an author and historian who truly grasps the mysteries of ancient Egypt. - Kirkus ReviewsDrawing on a lifetime of research; John Romer chronicles the history of Ancient Egypt from the building of the Great Pyramid through the rise and fall of the Middle Kingdom: a peak of Pharaonic culture and the period when writing first flourished. Through extensive research over many decades of work; reveals how the grand narratives of 19th and 20th century Egyptologists have misled us by portraying a culture of cruel monarchs and chronic war. Instead; based in part on discoveries of the past two decades; this extraordinary account shows what we can really learn from the remaining architecture; objects; and writing: a history based on physical reality.

ClarkI really think that books written by the people who participated in the civil war are a great untapped resource for people who are looking for a window into that time. McKim experiences are unique in that he started as a private; rose through the ranks in the infantry; was in the confederate cavelry and as a chaplin in the same arm of the Army of Northern Virginia. He was in the battle of Gettysburg and with the army unit until its surrender. He Tells of the home front and the special deprivation of a soldier form a border state; Maryland. This book is from his recollections and his diary. This work is well written and definitely worth the time and small Kindle expense. I really enjoyed it. One of the best civil war books I've read from a veteran of ...By donald joullianOne of the best civil war books I've read from a veteran of the war. I liked it so much; I purchased a leather bound copy. Doctor McKim's 1906 address to the confederate veterans should be required reading for all Americans especially in this age of revised history; the purging of southern history and the denying of the true factors on both sides that served as catalysis for the civil war. My ancestors fought both in the American war for independence as well as in the southern war for independence. Americans should know the truth ; and venerate the true patriots of both these wars; on both sides in the latter before liberals; PBS; apologists; and politicians erase the true valor;honor; and sacrifice of the southern veterans. Written by a college graduate who served as a private soldier and staff officer in the war who took some time off to become and return to serve as a chaplain in the conflict. He later attained a doctorate in theology. This book equals general John Gordon CSA account toward the patriotism of all those who fought in this war.16 of 16 people found the following review helpful.
