Very Nice...By orabellaI personally have not read this book; I bought it for my husband for a Father's Day gift as he loves reading books about history. I had read good reviews about the book; and it seemed interesting. He was very happy with receiving the book and is looking forward to reading it.5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Recommended Reading - The Real StoryBy janiesue1000My dad; a veteran of World War II; read this book and offers this review ...This reviewer was assigned to Division Headquarters of the 4th Armored Division early in June 1942. In the course of my duties; I processed documents of the Division's officers; including those of Major Albin F. Irzyk. Ours; therefore; is an acquaintanceship that has spanned over 70 years.I contacted the General recently as he was mentioned in the "Bulge Bugle;" a Battle of the Bulge Association publication.I believe that the book should be recommended reading for West Point and ROTC cadets interested in becoming tank commanders. The first 28 pages contain a wealth of information on the subject. The journey of the 4th Armored Division is vividly and accurately portrayed by the General. His descriptions are my recollections of the journey from Pine Camp; NY to Tennessee; the Mojave Desert; Camp Bowie; the Atlantic crossing; England; the Normandy landing; the breakout; the race across France; the bitter cold 160 mile rush on December 17; 1944 to the Bastogne area; the Air Force bombing the enemy on Christmas Day; heading east again; crossing the Rhine on tread covered anchored pontoons. And then there was the Ohrdruf concentration camp. The memory of the contents of the excavation remain in my mind to this very day and it is so graphically described by the General. For as he says that is what the war was all about. This is why we were fighting.I was honorably discharged in November 1945 and did not take part in the Vietnam War. However; the General did and his description of the battle for the Vietnamese Saigon Embassy is riveting. His contrast of the how the two wars were managed was enlightening.Once I started reading the book it was hard to put down. Here was history that I had a small part in. I highly recommend it to those who have not experienced it.--- A veteran of World War II
