The incarceration of Japanese Americans has been discredited as a major blemish in American democratic tradition. Accompanying this view is the assumption that the ethnic group help unqualified allegiance to the United States. Between Two Empires probes the complexities of prewar Japanese America to show how Japanese in America held an in-between space between the United States and the empire of Japan; between American nationality and Japanese racial identity.

Best of the short biographies of LincolnBy Great American HistoryFor a short biography; Gienapp's work is insightful; thorough; and a great read. I've read a lot of Lincoln biographies; most of which are much longer; but I still learned a lot about Lincoln in this book. I believe Allen Guelzo's "Reedemer President" is the best of the longer biographies of Lincoln; but Gienapp's "Abraham Lincoln and Civil War America: A Biography" is the best that is under 300 pages. He provides the reader with a balanced picture of Lincoln and the times he lived in.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Enjoyed this formatBy D.
