Sudan is a country in turmoil; ravaged by civil war; plagued by roaming gangs of rebel and government militia; and is rarely out of the news. Despite government propaganda; tales of state-sponsored murder; genocide and humanitarian crises are rife; and there is a real need for a measured investigation which carefully examines the causes of the troubles. In this important book; Jok Madut Jok delves deep into Sudan's culture and past; isolating the factors that cause its fractured national identity. Highlighting the Arabization of the central government in the north and the imposition of this cultural identity upon Darfur and the Christian South; Jok analyses the vicious cycle of violence and goes on to ask what can be done to improve the plight of the Sudanese people in the future. Filled with sharp argument and heroic tales in the face of adversity; Sudan will appeal to everyone who wishes to gain a greater understanding of the current crises facing Sudan and its people.

German air presence in the Spanish Civil War/RevolutionBy Steven PetersonThe Spanish Civil War/Revolution (depending on which actor was being supported) is fascinating for so many reasons--international bridges; fascism versus socialism versus anarchism versus monarchists. . . . Another reason for examining this conflict is that major powers tested their weapons systems at that time. In this bloody war; we see Italians; Soviets;; and German forces involved. This slender Osprey volume focuses on one actor in the war--the German pilot "volunteers." We see how the German forces came to be involved in Spain; how the different aircraft performed; the development of strategy and tactics in the air. . . .The German fighter plane first used? A biplane! Okay until it began to come up against Soviet fighters. The Heinkel 51 (HE 51) had uses; but it soon became obvious that it was not a world class fighter. Next up? The superior monoplane; the Messerschmidt 109--a redoubtable fighter (as it evolved) during the early stages of World War II.This book does a nice job of detailing the planes; their pilots; the logistics; and the organization of the German forces. For a quick introduction tho the subject; this will serve the reader well.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Osprey's 'Aces of the Legion Condor'By Mike Still'Aces of the Legion Condor' continues Osprey's tradition of useful aviation history and modeling research monographs. The book contains several useful photos of varying quality of German fighters and crews in the Spanish Civil War; along with a good selection of color profiles with information on German paint specifications. This book is also a good starting point for understanding German support for the Nationalist side of the conflict. The book does not address what seems to be an overall uncertainty about the paints used on Bf 109s in the conflict; but that is really outside the book's scope and an issue best resolved through other resources. A useful listing of German fighter pilots who reached ace status while serving in the legion is provided.4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. excellant from the start.By John R. Beaman Jr.Robert Forsyth is well known for meticulous research and good narrative in the same book. This volume is no exception. Many know of the Luftwaffe "Experten" from WWII; but this volume answers how many of them got their start; gaining experience and expertise that was unmatched when the war began. This was learned in Spain's Civil War. Robert does a great job of blending narrative with detail and personal stories.Highly recommended.
