Between 1955 and 1956 the Government of India passed four Hindu Law Acts to reform and codify Hindu family law. Scholars have understood these acts as a response to growing concern about women's rights but; in a powerful re-reading of their history; this book traces the origins of the Hindu law reform project to changes in the political-economy of late colonial rule. The Hindu Family and the Emergence of Modern India considers how questions regarding family structure; property rights and gender relations contributed to the development of representative politics; and how; in solving these questions; India's secular and state power structures were consequently drawn into a complex and unique relationship with Hindu law. In this comprehensive and illuminating resource for scholars and students; Newbigin demonstrates the significance of gender and economy to the history of twentieth-century democratic government; as it emerged in India and beyond.

Highly Recommended; An Unknown HistoryBy Avid ReaderA wonderful narrative which gets into some technical detail about how Adolfo Kaminsky managed to create perfect forgeries of documents over the decades; as well as telling about the WWII and the post-war period where he worked tirelessly for the safety and freedom of those who were under the thumb of the Third Reich; post-war French imperialism and other despotic governments around the world. The tension and suspense of those times is perfectly communicated by Sarah Kaminsky; using her father's documents and recollections. Highly recommended for those wanting to learn more about the smaller battles which resulted in thousands of lives being saved.2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Riveting suspenseBy RosieRead the book in 2 sittings; it is a page-turner. I find the recounting of Kaminsky's forgeries after WWII equally fascinating as those during the war. The conflicts after the war are during my lifetime; and the book provides new perspectives on various liberation movements around the world.2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. I was amazed that even under the stress of imprisonment in Drancy; Kaminsky pursued his interest in chemistry!
