An important collection of voices that provide crucial context to Native historyBy chanterelleSome time ago I was writing a character that is Crow into one of my books; and I did a lot to research the Apsaalooke culture and how kids can end up off the reservation; in foster care; and in general; lost to their tribe. I didn't find much; and that was sad. I had nobody to talk to; because the only two Native people I know are from other nations. Their stories are compelling; but they are not the whole big picture. This book provides a fascinating look at the history of the First Nations; the way they had been treated; and what became of them now. I only wish I had this book in my hands two years ago.Ironically; I came to the US from Europe as a teen. I was told I could be whatever I wanted; and our family's sponsor asked me what do I want to do with my life. I declared that I'd finish high school; because education is important; but then I'd move to an Indian reservation; where I'd ride horses and carry a six-shooter and be adopted into a tribe. My view of America had still been stuck in the books from mid to late 1800's. This book; "American Indian Nations;" is doing a lot to bring context to snippets of outdated - yet interesting - information. This is an important book. You may not like the way us white people come across in it. Read it anyway.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. very fast; receive it next day.By Clyde Sheridanvery good. Not an easy read to much one subject then changing to the next.
