American Legends: The Life of Dolly Parton

DOC American Legends: The Life of Dolly Parton by Charles River Editors in History

Description

Beyond the Last Path: A Buchenwald Survivor's Story; first published in 1947; is the first-hand account by Eugene Weinstock; a Hungarian Jew who was imprisoned by the Nazis in World War Two at the Buchenwald concentration/extermination camp in Germany. The book is a simply told; yet profoundly moving account of his arrest and imprisonment at the infamous camp; where the cremation ovens operated virtually non-stop. Weinstock attributes his survival; in part; to the strong underground organization within the camp; which helped maintain order and distribute supplies equitably. The book concludes with the liberation of the prison by US troops; at which time; Weinstock weighed a mere 80 pounds.

"Some days; they pan out a little better than others; but you still gotta always just try."By Don KidwellNo doubt she's definitely worth infinitely more than a bag of cornmeal (what her parents payed the family doctor for her delivery being as dirt poor as they were.) To be honest I'm not all that into country music which is that part of her life the book focuses on most; my interest stemming more from her appearances in the movies "9 to 5" and "Best Little *Chicken Ranch* in Texas". However; looking back thru the book I have to say it included some interesting facts like her initial success in Nashville occurring not as a singer but as a songwriter and some notable quotes that humored me like her joking about her plastic surgery saying "I'm comfortable in my own skin; no matter how far it's stretched." I'd probably give it 3.5 stars overall and bump it up for the memories. Here's one final passage from a song of hers that struck a chord; "Although we had no money/ I was rich as could be/ In my coat of many colors/ My momma made for me."0 of 0 people found the following review helpful.
