At sixteen years old; Klara Wizel is full of life with a loving family. But her spirit quails when she and her family are swept up with fifteen thousand other Hungarian Jews and forcibly transported to one of the world's most infamous concentration camps: Auschwitz-Birkenau. There Klara comes face to face with one of history’s most infamous Nazi doctors; nicknamed The Great Selector and the Murderer in White; Josef Mengele. Klara watches in horror as Mengele sends her parents; her younger brother; and her older sister to the gas chamber; leaving Klara and her two remaining sisters to be housed like animals in the women's barracks. They live in constant fear of Mengele choosing them for one of his cruel scientific experiments. As the Russian allies close in; Mengele steps up his selection process and sentences Klara to the gas chamber. But in a miraculous turn of events; Klara escapes both the chamber and Auschwitz itself and makes her way across war-torn Europe back home to Sighet. The only survivor of record to escape Mengele's notorious death selection process; Klara's is an extraordinary and inspirational story of survival and resilience in the face of deep loss and extreme cruelty.

You might hate the man for his business practices that were patently illegal by today's standards; for statements like "The way to make money is to buy when blood is running in the streets" ; for paying $300 to send a substitute to fight in his place during the Civil War or for being obscenely rich. On the other hand; you might love the man for establishing a Foundation that provided funding for many worthwhile causes including a vaccine for yellow fever vaccine; whom was a firm believer in abolition; whom was a Sunday School teacher; and who believed that while "the world owes no man a living ... it owes every man an opportunity to make a living." Went into this book not sure if I was really going to enjoy it; but came out thinking he lead an interesting if conflicting life (especially considering his wayward father) and was definitely worth a read.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. John D. Rockefeller LifeBy SamI liked this book a lot. It gave insight into Rockefeller's early life and his relationship with his father and mother. He was very interesting in his outlook on life and his difficult relationship with his father. Plus; his great capacity for building a most successful oil empire.I totally recommend it to anyone who wants to know about this American legend.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Awesome and fascinatingBy Christina BlakeI loved it and it gave the readers a fascinating peek into the world of America's richest man. He was a study in contradiction; but I certainly learned alot about this man. Wonderful; wonderful book.
