Ben Lilly left behind enough writings to fill a book - and this is it! It includes Ben's hunting diaries; his chapters on bears and lions; magazine articles; an interview; and personal letters. Plus over 30 photos of Ben Lilly; many never before published. Known as "the last of the mountain men;" Ben grew to legendary status in both the Old South and in the Great Southwest. With careful; well researched annotations by editor Neil Carmony; "Ben Lilly's Tales" does much to separate the truth of Ben Lilly the man and hunter from the Lilly legend. This book will be primary source material for anyone interested in one of the great characters of Southern history; Western history; and the history of those hunters who have followed big game with hounds.

Best for the moneyBy JimThis is literally the best "bang" for your buck if you are interested in small arms from the Civil war..There is much information packed into this little book to satisfy; all tastes..Each piece is described in depth and ammo and how to load and fire clearly explained..I wanted some info about guns used right after the war(and during) by the cowboys;frontiersman and mountain men and was not disappointed..It is a great reference book.you won't be sorry if you purchase this one.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. This is great book for the basics at a great priceBy Tonya DullThis is great book for the basics at a great price. I use this book as a quick reference frequently for APPENDIX C - SMALL ARMS USAGE BY REGIMENT. This Appendix was research by the authors at the National Archives and represents the long arms used; by North South; during 1863-1864.The Appendix is sorted first by weapon; then by army (US;CS); then by regt #; then by state (i.e. Model 1855; US; 19 IN).Great reference!1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Great bookBy J. CallahanBlack and white photos of every weapon. Even better; portraits of the men who carried them. Excellent; concise reference. The only downside is the flimsy stapled binding. I will use this book frequently; and will probably wear it out.
