SIMPLE; BUT EXCELLENT STUDY BOOK ON THE ORIGINS OF THE CHURCH "FATHERS."By Marlene R.It is slightly simplistic and the hard part is trying to prove out his references; that alone would give one pause on whether his writing is truthful or not; however since I am familiar with a lot of the information that he wrote about--whether he is correct about his references or not--I already know that for the most part he is; so there's no worries on my end at all. I have read quite a lot of Origen's; Tertullius'; Eusebius' and others and I own two of their books; so I can easily check on Mr. Johnson's writings that way. Also; since he calls himself a Christian; why would he damage his reputation and dishonor the Name of Jesus Christ by lying or "embellishing" his writing? For what; to bolster his own ego? I don't think so...This book goes into exactly what the cover says: Ancient Fathers; meaning all those that decided what the church believes in; what it accepted as being truth; what it rejected; whose doctrine it accepted; and so on. The "church" does NOT mean one particular denomination--it means the first church; as in the Apostles' beginning of preaching Christianity around their known world at that time. In other words; it is NOT the Catholic church "fathers;" or the Baptist "fathers;" or the Presbyterian "fathers". No; it is the original preachers from the Post-Ascension day of Jesus Christ; fulfilling His commission to go out into the world and preach the Gospel. These are those who decided upon the "rules" or ordinances of the church and how it was to become church "law" and be followed from then on; according to the Scriptures. The book also describes the heresies that came into the church; corrupting and deceiving the original doctrine set forth according to the Scriptures and how quite a large number of those heresies are still in practice today. This book is for those who wish to know about the history of the beginning of the Church; starting with the 12 Apostles.5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Outstanding!!!By edward benedaOutstanding reading and history of the first century church. Avoid the teaching of the third century desert fathers and read about the first century church fathers and what they believed. By the third century the doctrines of the church had been corrupted and false doctrines had entered into the teachings. The Jesus and the Apostles Paul; James and others warned about this before it happened. Get the straight scoop and read from the disciples of the Apostles first hand. By the second century apostasy had already entered into the church. A must read for serious Bible readers and those who teach others.2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. this author summarizes the existing original documents in the case ...By gbkthis author summarizes the existing original documents in the case of the beliefs of the early church as held and taught by the apostles 12 + 70 disciples who knew Jesus. He also evaluates the teaching and beliefs of those who knew these 82 early church leaders. and then those who knew the eyewitnesses of the apostles. He considers the heretical teachings as they have continued to resurface through the ages. He comments on the various divisions of Christianity that have continued and their positive points and drawbacks.I have already loaned my copy and am ordering another.
