Review
4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. for Civil War character fansBy Carol DeChantThis book is full of helpful footnotes and back-of-book explanatory material; including afascinating appendix on Mrs. Lincoln's character; or lack thereof. If you enjoy personalglimpses of major personalities in the Lincoln era; you will find much here. I applaudthe most helpful back-of-book footnotes guides I've ever seen.If footnotes can't appear at bottom of page (where; let's face it; they are most helpful)this is the way to give the reader easy access. Atop each page in the footnotes sectionis the range of page numbers where citations occur in the text.2 of 3 people found the following review helpful. A close Lincoln associate by a major Lincoln scholarBy LINCOLN studentHay was a close associate of President Lincoln throughout his presidency keeping his own log of the presidents days and the issues confronting him. Professor Burlingame has selected the military issues and generals which Lincoln had to deal with. McCleland turned into a weak military leader with his own dreams of taking over and ran against Lincoln in the second campaign. The three day battle of Gettysburg is a strength of the book and of course the appointment of Grant; the future president.1 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Five StarsBy Richard H.
