Barbara Brackman's Civil War Sampler: 50 Quilt Blocks with Stories from History

ePub Barbara Brackman's Civil War Sampler: 50 Quilt Blocks with Stories from History by Barbara Brackman in History

Description

In this spellbinding history; David Goldfield offers the first major new interpretation of the Civil War era since James M. McPherson's Battle Cry of Freedom. Where other scholars have seen the conflict as a triumph of freedom; Goldfield paints it as America's greatest failure: a breakdown of society caused by the infusion of evangelical religion into the world of politics. The price of that failure was horrific; but the carnage accomplished what statesmen could not: It made the United States one nation and eliminated the divisive force of slavery. The victorious North moved ahead; a land of innovation and industry. Religion was supplanted by a gospel of economic and scientific progress; and the South was left behind. The "fiery trial" of war transformed our country-a conflagration captured in vivid detail in America Aflame.

This is the 3rd book with Civil War quilt patterns that I have purchased and it is the BEST ONE!! The instructions for the 50 blocks are for 8" and 12" blocks; so the variations are unlimited. The pictures of the blocks are paired up with a short history of the block and a picture or photo of some historical event; person or item; hence really giving meaning to the quilt. The book provides an unique index of 3 categories: Quilt blocks; Stitchers; and Content --which lists the historical persons and places referenced in the book. The photographs of the blocks are so well done that you can actually see which fabric was used. Barbara Brackman does not disappoint!!1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Not my favorite Civil War pattern bookBy Quilter GailI wish Barbara had directions for the construction the blocks. Some are very simple and easy but some are a lot more tricky. The star has Y seams and very tricky to sew. The blocks are pretty much Civil War reproduction and classic blocks but some are quite different. Some of her cutting instructions are very confusing.13 of 13 people found the following review helpful.
