Battle Story: Waterloo 1815

PDF Battle Story: Waterloo 1815 by Gregory Fremont-Barnes in History

Description

The major naval powers -- Britain; America; Russia; and Japan -- have all played a part in the theater of war at sea over the last one hundred years. Naval fighting has always been a rapidly developing affair; and in no century have changes been so swift and fundamental. This book is a detailed account of the bloody and tragic battles that took place and of the shifting pattern in the status of the naval powers; sometimes masking its effect on our history today. In 1905; when this book begins; the first major engagement between ironclad fleets -- the Battle of Tsu-Shima -- took place in the Far East and decided the outcome of the Russo-Japanese war in Japan's favor. What follows are the mighty sea battles of our century; graphically reconstructed for the reader. Victories; defeats; and mutinies at sea; from the battle with the Bismarck to the battles of Midway and Guadalcanal; are all recorded in sometimes horrific detail. This is a moving testament to battles the likes of which changed the world.

Primer on One of History's Most Legendary Battles!By Mike O'ConnorWaterloo has to rank as one of the most famous - if not; the most famous - battles in history. The epic battle between Napoleon and Wellington was a world-changing event for Europe in 1815 and for years beyond. Hundreds of books have been written on Waterloo; one of the latest being Gregory Fremont-Barnes' volume for Spellmount/History Press published in 2012.Like other volumes in the BATTLE STORY series; Fremont-Barnes' book sets the stage for events in Belgium; describes the top commanders and opposing forces; traces the development of the battle; analyzes crucial mistakes and summarizes the impact of Napoleon's defeat. Numerous sidebars are included on the typical French and British soldier; cavalry rates of advance; shrapnel; transport of wounded; cavalry versus infantry squares; etc. The easy-to-follow; insightful narrative is complimented by vintage artwork; maps and diagrams.Though it makes no claim to being definitive or exhaustive; the 160-page book does serve as an excellent overview of that legendary battle. Having had little knowledge of who-what-where-and-why; I found WATERLOO 1815 a useful and enjoyable introduction to that long-ago battle. Recommended.
