Description

A mix of tragedy and farce; this tale tells the story of John Barrow; Second Secretary to the Admiralty. Between 1816 and 1845 his teams of naval officers partook in an ambitious programme of exploration; scouring the world's undiscovered territories; unprepared for the conditions they would face.

Five "duels" at a great priceBy WryGuy2"Battleground: The Greatest Tank Duels in History"; edited by Steven Zaloga; is a collection of 5 entries from Osprey Publishing's "Duel" series; each comparing two types of tanks who fought against each other during the 20th century. The duel format is typically around 80 pages long (although due to formatting and book dimensions; it's closer 70 pages with the same content here); and presents an analysis of the factors ... human; mechanical; and tactical ... of the two weapons systems being compared; describes how the weapons were developed and utilized; and includes drawings; photographs; and illustrations. The five entries in the book are: "T-34 vs Panther: Ukraine 1943"; "Tiger vs Sherman Firefly: Normandy 1944"; M26 Pershing vs T-34/85: Korea 1950; Centurion vs T-55: Golan Heights 1973"; and "M1 Abrams vs T-72: Desert Storm 1991". All are at least good; with "T-34 vs Panther: Ukraine 1943" by Robert Forczyk and "M26 Pershing vs T-34/85: Korea 1950" by Steven Zaloga being my favorites and are outstanding. If you already have all five of these "duels"; there isn't anything new here. But amazingly; at the time of this review; this complete book will cost you is less than buying one of the "duels" singly. So if you're only interested in two or three of these "duels" (or even only one!); this is a great get. The book is well written; excellently illustrated; and has copious numbers of maps and photographs. Five stars.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Battleground; battle tested.By Pablo Calahorra GonzalezComprising several "Osprey Duel" series; the title collects five titles: three by Steven Zaloga ("Tiger vs Sherman Firefly"; "M26 Pershing vs T34-85" and "M1 Abrams vs T72") and one each by Forczyk ("T34 vs Panther") and Simon Dunstan ( "Centurion vs T55"). They cover WW-2; Korea; Yom Kippur and Desert Storm. ;Interesting subjects all of them; well written by solvent authors; this solid and elegant hardback edition is a valuable addition to any military history bookshelf.
