PDF Battles of New Hope Church; The by Russell Blount Jr. in History

Description

In August 1944 the British Pacific Fleet did not exist. Six months later it was strong enough to launch air attacks on Japanese territory; and by the end of the war it constituted the most powerful force in the history of the Royal Navy; fighting as professional equals alongside the U.S. Navy in the thick of the action. How this was achieved by a nation nearing exhaustion after five years of conflict is a story of epic proportions in which ingenuity; diplomacy and dogged persistence all played a part. This groundbreaking work describes the background; creation and expansion of the British Pacific Fleet from its first tentative strikes to its impact on the immediate post-war period. The book is the first to demonstrate the British Pacific Fleet's impressive achievement.

LamoreauxThis book utilized a wonderful narrative type to describe the action of a series of three less-known battles fought in the Atlanta campaign during the Civil War. Mr. Blount's prose had a "you are there" type of feel; but with enough detail that even the die-hard Civil War/War Between the States scholar can go away learning something. The battles that were fought in New Hope Church; Dallas; and Pickett's Mill; Georgia were among the hardest fought by either side during this arduous campaign; yet they have always rated less in the eyes of most scholars; until now. Although it does not cover the most minute detail; it does open the door for further study if one desires by utilizing the detailed footnotes and bibliography. I also found that the few maps found in this book offer a decent; but broad view of the "big picture" but would have enjoyed seeing some more detail featuring the regimental view rather than umbrella organizations. Overall; I enjoyed Mr. Blount's fine chronicle and look forward to further study of this campaign thanks to his direction.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful.
