Black Aces High: The Story of a Modern Fighter Squadron at War

ebooks Black Aces High: The Story of a Modern Fighter Squadron at War by Robert Wilcox in History

Description

The civil rights movement’s most prominent leaders; Martin Luther King; Jr. (1929–1968) and Malcolm X (1925–1965); represent two wings of the revolt against racism: nonviolent resistance and revolution "by any means necessary." This volume presents the two leaders’ relationship to the civil rights movement beyond a simplified dualism. A rich selection of speeches; essays; and excerpts from Malcolm X’s autobiography and King’s sermons shows the breadth and range of each man’s philosophy; demonstrating their differences; similarities; and evolution over time. Organized into six topical groups; the documents allow students to compare the leaders’ views on subjects including integration; the American dream; means of struggle; and opposing racial philosophies. An interpretive introductory essay; chronology; selected bibliography; document headnotes; and questions for consideration provide further pedagogical support.

My friends and I love flying a flight simulator that is based on real aircraft movement and flight characteristics and apart from the story of this book; it really gives a lot of insight to how the F-14A handled and how the pilots had to wrestle this big beautiful lady through the sky. From a historical stand point; this book brought to life a part of this war that most people dont know about. Everyone hears about the USAF's F-117's and F-15's tore through and ruled the skies. But you never heard of the true strike aircraft and the leaders of the skies; VF-41 and the very old Tomcats that they fly. Everything from the LANTURN pod; and all the new avionics systems; to finding small pockets of Serbs in the mountains; to paving new ways to direct ordnance with the use of FAC(A). This book tells the hardship of being controlled by someone that isn't on the ground or on the ship. They were controlled by people in Europe. And so everything they did (every strike; every hour flown; every ingress and eggress taken; even down to how many shakes a guy can do at the can) was controlled by the European led coalition leaders. These pilots did the almost impossible job with the oldest jets in the Navy; and did it to perfection. This same squadron even led the leading strikes into Afghanistan a few years later in 2001. That alone speaks volumes to what they were able to do with what they had. One could only imagine what they could have done if they had the later model F-14D. These pilots are the unsung heros of the Serbian Conflict. If you are looking for a book that tells a lot abou the history of the conflict; the political side of the conflict; and from the perspective of the pilots and commanders on the ground; this is a must read. But also; like i mentioned before; this book also tells you about the plane and pilots. For example; how do you beat a Mig 29; which on paper is vastly superior to the Tomcat in the dogfighting arena? This book tells you how these pilots were able to do it. I am no pilot. I cant because of medical problems. But the places I can fly is online in the FSX flight simulator and now the only thing in the sky that can beat me is a night time carrier landing. This book teaches so much about the Tomcat; flight characteristices; troubles and jubilations; and most importantly; the pilots. This book really focuses on the personal trials associated with pilots when they go on "cruise." In fact; there are a number of pages that kind of read like a love story that brought me to tears a couple of times because this pilot loved this woman so much. It really is a heart wrenching book that will leave you proud of these young men and what they were able to do. it will also leave you hitting the bathroom vanity because of issues that they have. Issues for example; this is what is needed; this is what we can do to make it work; but because of these people we cant get it approved. If you read any book about modern military aviation; this is by far my favorite book. I've read it 4 times in 2 years. Definately a must buy!!!!0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. A brilliant documentation of the struggles of one of the last ...By Elliot T HallA brilliant documentation of the struggles of one of the last great Tomcat squadrons in the Navy; and their pioneering of the CAS/SCAR/AR missions that the Navy now considers its standard mission.
