One Hell of a Black FlagBy Retired CBPBlack Flag Over Dixie is so extensively documented and footnoted; and the studious professionalism of the various authors so convincing; that this book clearly realizes its primary intent. To show the widespread reality of Southern atrocities against black Union soldiers. Many of us have already read about Fort Pillow and the Crater. There were many more such atrocities. Those of us who have read extensively into the literature are aware of far more atrocities than the myths of both South and North have long perpetrated. The draconian brutality of Union troops in occupied and contested areas against civilians and a more limited Southern retaliation to that brutality. The robbing; rape and even murder of black slaves by invading Union troops. The death camps that were prisoner of war camps on both sides. Black Flag Over Dixie puts one more nail in the coffin of the chivalric myths of the Civil War/War Between the States. But there is more. In the last chapter of the book; which is a compendium. of various articles; is one by Mark Grimsley. Though some of what he says is more philosophy than established fact; he does eloquently drive home one salient fact. Whether or nor the Civil War/War Between the States was about racism or about a number of factors; including racism; disdain; contempt and even hatred between the races pervaded American society in those days from top to bottom. South.....and North.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Well doneBy writer.MWonderful research material thanks!4 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Civil Unrest in AmericaBy yonderBlack Flag Over Dixie: Racial Atrocities and Reprisals in the Civil WarIrwin's book on Civil War events was a much needed source of knowledge for me. I have done a lot of Civil War research but this is the first time that I learned of the tactics involved in the war with such graphic details. I like this book because he actually use materials from the participants of war. So much of the history is lost to generations because of the silence of all the people involved including later generation and the fear and shame of what happen in the war involving Whites; Blacks; and Indians. I was born in Camden; Arkansas and finished High School there; living only a few miles from th battle area and never knew anything about the war in Camden; slavery;and hardships. This book provides information that people need to know information; not because of wanting more violence; but to realize and learn what actually happen. This is a need to know book! It provides a journey through Dixie that is important to me as a person. I often wondered how lost building skills were lost; now I know; if skills are not used they become lost in about three generations. If events are not transfered to each generation they quickly become obsolete; and that also happens with history; unless someone researchs and reveals the information. Irwin has done an excellent job in bringing this part of history to many generations now and to generations to come.Hammermill Color Laser Gloss Paper; 94 Brightness; 32lb; Letter Size; 300 Sheets per Pack (16311-0)A Manual for Writers of Research Papers; Theses; and Dissertations; Seventh Edition: Chicago Style for Students and Researchers (Chicago Guides to Writing; Editing; and Publishing)Apple MacBook Pro MD313LL/A 13.3-Inch Laptop (OLD VERSION)Everyday Copy Paper; 20lb; 92 Bright; 8-1/2 x 11" - CaseSPR
