It details the 1718 expedition sent by the Governor of the British Colony of Virginia to destroy the notorious pirate in his North Carolina lair. The raid had both a land and a sea component; and the unusual feature of having been conducted into the territory of another colony.Author Angus Konstam briefly revisits the golden age of piracy in North American waters; before moving on to the career of Edward Teach; AKA Blackbeard. Blackbeard's bold attacks along the Atlantic seaboard; including the daring blockade of Charlestown; South Carolina; brought him to the attention of Governor Spotswood of Virginia. Spotswood organized a joint attack against Blackbeard's base of operations at Ocracoke Island in North Carolina; sending two small sloops under Royal Navy control by sea and a column of pirate hunters overland.Konstam describes the day of Blackbeard's last fight in exciting detail; weaving together various official and unofficial accounts. The narrative is very nicely supported by maps; diagrams; photographs; period depictions of Blackbeard; and some well-done modern illustrations. An epilogue deals with the crime and punishment of the surviving pirates."Blackbeard's Last Fight" is a fascinating if concise account of piracy and pirate-hunting; built around the expedition that ended Blackbeard's career. DondershineInformative and well illustrated; but three separate maps are rendered completely unreadable by being chopped into quarters on the Kindle. Not worth it because of this. Stick to the print version. Frankly I don't think should be allowed to sell books like this without a disclaimer that some content is unreadable not "meant for large screens."
