Bonhoeffer's the Cost of Discipleship (Shepherd's Notes. Christian Classics)

audiobook Bonhoeffer's the Cost of Discipleship (Shepherd's Notes. Christian Classics) by From Holman Reference in History

Description

In this definitive work-a product of more than half a century of research and close observation-the noted anthropologist Omer C. Stewart provides a sweeping reconstruction of the rise of peyotism and the Native American Church. Although it is commonly known that the modern peyote religion became formalized around 1880 in western Oklahoma; it had roots in precontact American Indian ritual. Today it is practiced by thousands upon thousands of American Indians throughout the West.Long a subject of controversy; peyotism has become a unifying influence in Indian life; providing the basis for ceremonies; friendships; social gatherings; travel; marriage; and much more. As Stewart demonstrates; it has been a source of comfort and healing and a means of expression for a troubled people.

PoageWe as Christians focus too much on God's gift of eternal life and then expect God to bless and give in every imaginable way; ignoring how God expect us to live our Lives for Him and to sacrifice when necessary. We don't like to talk about that we are servants of God-not vice versa. Ultimately; the author lost his life; which likely would not have happened had he not devoted his full life to God. Hard to read in parts; but what really good book isn't. It's not a paper back novel or one of those "touchy feely" things many self focused religous people like to read.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Cost of DiciplineBy CustomerAn eye opening and thought provoking book. Parts of it I thought were a bit radical or to zealot and not of Gods intent( my opinion). It certainly wood be difficult to be a perfect Christian according to what the author suggests a Christian to be.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. He tried to warn the people but they would not listen. The cost of discipleship cost him his life in a consantration camp a short time before they were rescued. Living for the Lord will cost you something.
