Brandy Station 1863: First step towards Gettysburg (Campaign)

ebooks Brandy Station 1863: First step towards Gettysburg (Campaign) by Dan Beattie in History

Description

In June 1631 pirates from Algiers and armed troops of the Turkish Ottoman Empire; led by the notorious pirate captain Morat Rais; stormed ashore at the little harbour village of Baltimore in West Cork. They captured almost all the villagers and bore them away to a life of slavery in North Africa. The prisoners were destined for a variety of fates -- some would live out their days chained to the oars as galley slaves; while others would spend long years in the scented seclusion of the harem or within the walls of the Sultan's palace. The old city of Algiers; with its narrow streets; intense heat and lively trade; was a melting pot where the villagers would join slaves and freemen of many nationalities. Only two of them ever saw Ireland again.

Unlike many of the Osprey battle series that only touch the surface of larger battles; perhaps because they are so complex; this format works really well for a battle of the Brandy Station scale. It provides appropriate detail at a regimental and brigade level that could not be achieved with other Osprey books such as their treatment of Fredericksburg for example. As a result it is much more than the 30;000ft overview with a couple of detailed cameos that you usually get from Osprey. It provides as much detail as most of us will ever need on this dramatic event. Having visited the battlefield the maps are an excellent resource. I did feel the authors were a little harsh on Stuart who after his initial setback appears to have handled the battle with his usual skill. Overall though; an excellent work.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Battle of Brandy StationBy mahdi1rayThis is a well written and well researched book.
