Some reviewers say there's too much detail; but I find those details helpful and insightful. The book is a truly valuable resource; and Noble Ross Reat has performed an exceptional service in summarizing Buddhist history and discussing many of its pivotal figures. The book is an excellent complement to the more recent and equally informative Blackwell "Companion to Buddhist Philosophy" (edited by Steven Emmanuel); an anthology of lucid and astute essays on many Buddhist topics. I keep returning to Reat's book for insight and inspiration; especially as I write my book on "Buddha's Political Philosophy" (a continuation and expansion of my essay with the same title; the first 3/4 of which act as an introduction to basic Buddhist ideas and history; first published at the Political Animal website in the spring of 2016).1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. A Great History of BuddhismBy Chris LeeI highly recommended Reat's wonderfully informative history. It has helped me with a more critical and mature understanding of Buddhism; and this has sparked a greater sense of happiness. As a companion book; I recommend "The Noble Eightfold Path" by Bhikku Bodhi.9 of 9 people found the following review helpful. A history of Asia wrapped in a layer of BuddhismBy R. MuttI bought this book after becoming frustrated with the glut of Buddhism books on the market that purport to explain its history but do nothing more than offer anecdotes and examples of Buddhist art and architecture. Buddhism: A History is a book on exactly that - the History of Buddhism. It covers a massive amount of ground in a fairly compact volume. The reader will learn about how Buddhism migrated to and affected the cultures of various countries; including China; Japan; Korea; Vietnam; and others. The content is almost 20 years old but; from a historical perspective; you'll gain far more from this book than from any other; and filling in the 20 year gap shouldn't be terribly difficult with modern literature.I give this book my highest recommendation and would consider it best in class for its topic. Readers will not only learn about Buddhist history but will also by default learn a lot about Asian history and culture. It's a fantastic resource all around.
