So familiar are we with the numerals that bear the misleading name of A rabic; and so extensive is their use in Europe and the A mericas; that it is difficult for us to realize that their general acceptance in the transactions of commerce is a matter of only the last four centuries; and that they are unknown to a very large part of the human race to-day. It seems strange that such a laborsaving device should have struggled for nearly a thousand years after its system of place value was perfected before it replaced such crude notations as the one that the Roman conqueror made substantially universal in Europe. Such; however; is the case; and there is probably no one who has not at least some slight passing interest in the story of this struggle. To the mathematician and the student of civilization the interest is generally a deep one; to the teacher of the elements of knowledge the interest may be less marked; but nevertheless it is real; and even the business man who makes daily use of the curious symbols by which we express the numbers of commerce; cannot fail to have some appreciation for the story of the rise and progress of these tools of his trade.(Typographical errors above are due to OCR software and don't occur in the book.)About the Publisher Forgotten Books is a publisher of historical writings; such as: Philosophy; Classics; Science; Religion; History; Folklore and Mythology.Forgotten Books' Classic Reprint Series utilizes the latest technology to regenerate facsimiles of historically important writings. We need the reminder to CHOOSE PEACE INTENTIONALLYBy F JulikaWe are all fortunate that Max Eisen was still able to author his book at his advanced age about the reality he had to go through but only a few survived. The more years pass; the more it is necessary to remind people of the history that should not be repeated. There are people who even doubt the stories; the testimonials; and the pictures; the proofs about what had happened. Unfortunately far too many ugly events from all over the world are still reported in the news every day. Books like this could wake up nations to choose peace intentionally; so we would not have to survive by chance alone.1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. By sheer luck; against all odds; a couragious survivor tells his story.By Carol MonteverdeThis book is hard to read. Yes. But it must be read. It will bring out all your emotions; as you read about Tibor's (Max) whole family; annihilated by a ruthless regime. So many things he experienced that you may not have heard before. For some reason; one of the saddest moments is when he had to leave his dog; Farkas; so precious to him; and he would never see him again. Never mind his precious saintly mother; and his brothers and baby sister; who were all murdered by those horrible devils; that were inhuman. I am so glad to have read this book; and wish I could thank Max personally for undertaking such a difficult task; in writing this book; thereby fulfilling his father's last wish. Please tell the world about what happened here. That was the wish. Please read this book;and share it with others; that in doing so; Max's family; and so many others just like his; will never be forgotten.
