In 1746; an African-American slave named Eve was convicted of poisoning and killing her master; Peter Montague; in Orange County; Virginia. She was burned at the stake on a knoll near the first county courthouse. The site of her burning became known as “Eve’s Wail.†Terry Barkley sheds new light on this terrible; largely forgotten chapter in colonial Virginia history. He sets the stage of this tragedy with a glimpse at the early history of Orange County; Virginia; and the surrounding region. Through meticulous research delving into documented and oral sources; he recreates the trial and execution of Eve and examines crime and punishment during this period of colonial history.

Carrying The Chalice ForwardBy Niven SinclairCARRYING THE CHALICE FORWARDby Martin CarriereThis is a book which should be in every public library. This is a book which should be part of every school's curricula because (a) it is beautifully written and (b) it emphasises the need for us to recognise that we are all at one with each other (regardless of ethnic origins) in our primitive mortal needs. This book transcends religions. It is a book about humanity. It touches the soul. It fires the imagination. It enriches our understanding of life.I wish I could think as Martin thinks. I wish I could live as Martin spells it out in hispowerful prose. Alas; like the most of mankind; I have fallen by the wayside but; if Ihad to follow any teacher; it would be Martin because every word he writes comes straight from his heart. I carry his book with me so that others might dip into it andbecome as spell-bound as I have been by the all-bracing concept of humanity it portrays - a humanity freed from religious dogma. I keep dipping into it because it enriches me as no other book has ever done.It is truly inspirational. Buy it. It will be the best decision of your life.Niven Sinclair0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Family ForwardBy Spirit Journey 54The author did a good job telling his point of view about Native peoples' beliefs and the importance of protecting Mother Earth. The book as well talked about marriages with Native people and their bloodlines.I have learned a few new things about Native culture from reading this book and it has sparked my interest to learn more about their culture. I think that there is a lot that people can learn from Native culture; especially learning from their beliefs of protecting nature; living together in peace as brothers and sisters; and working together as a family to protect Mother earth. The author also writes the book from his view about his personal spiritual journey.Great book to read and it was very informative about Native Culture from both historical and cultural perspectives.D Carriere
