Born in Canada and assisting in founding the initial French settlements of Biloxi and Mobile on the American Gulf Coast; he would go on to become the guiding force on the Louisiana - Texas frontier. Sent by Pierre Le Moyne Sieur d'Iberville; Louisiana's founder; to explore west central Louisiana; St. Denis would found Natchitoches in 1714; the oldest city within the subsequent Louisiana Purchase almost 100 years later. From his Natchitoches base; St. Denis would maintain a dominant position in the affairs of the Spanish; French and; in particular; the Native Americans for 40 years. He would reopen Spain's missions in East Texas; trade extensively with the Comanche; Apache; Caddo; Osage; Wichita; Kansa and Kiowa among others and establish wide ranging; yet surreptitious; commerce between Spain and France; all while managing France's affairs so impeccably that he would be knighted. Along the way he would reestablish Spain's El Camino Real; the 1;000 mile trading thoroughfare stretching from Saltillo; Mexico to Natchitoches; Louisiana; assist in the location and settlement of San Antonio; Texas and manage ground troops in the capture of Pensacola; Florida during the French-Spanish war along the Gulf Coast.Written 50 years ago (and thus a bit stale in style); this work by Ross Phares does a very good job of relating the earliest history of today's States of Texas and Louisiana. St. Denis was an impact player of his time. It was he who determined that Texas should be Spanish; not French; and ultimately; over 200 years later; that the Sabine River boundary he established between those colonies so many years ago would be the exact State boundary between Texas and Louisiana today! This is a very interesting and worthwhile read.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful.
