Christian Historiography: Five Rival Versions

DOC Christian Historiography: Five Rival Versions by Jay D. Green in History

Description

This is the second English book by Dr. Tareq Al-Suwaidan. This book provides a foundation of understanding on the role of women in Islam and tackles common misconceptions on the subject. Not only does it discuss the roles of women in marriage and among their families– but also their roles as warriors; worshipers; scholars and callers to Islam. It gives its readers a guided explanation as each role is accompanied with stories of great women as told in the Quran and Hadith. We narrate the stories of more than fifty great women whose names and exemplary behavior are enshrined in the history of Islam.

Review

A fine topical history of recent American Christian historiographyBy Anson Cassel MillsJay Green; a professor at evangelical Covenant College in Georgia; has been seriously thinking about Christian historiography since graduate school; and this book is even more directly the result of his teaching historiography to college students. In an interview; Green said his intent in writing it was “to help students understand the variety of meanings contemporary believers have attached to the idea of writing history from a Christian point of view.” Despite some doubts about his notion of “five rival versions;” I believe Green has met his goal. His book seems especially strong in providing a topical history of recent American Christian historiography; something not as well treated in any other book of my acquaintance.Stylistically the writing is clear and approachable; even if doubtless few students will pick up the book on their own. Sometimes the discussion seemed somewhat labored and repetitive; and I could have done with fewer “scare quotes;” but overall; Green’s book is a fine exposition that will be read with profit by college instructors as well as their students.
