Christian Thought: A Historical Introduction

DOC Christian Thought: A Historical Introduction by Chad Meister; James Stump in History

Description

Religion; Language and Power shows that the language of ‘religion’ is far from neutral; and that the packaging and naming of what English speakers call ‘religious’ groups or identities is imbued with the play of power. Religious Studies has all too often served to amplify voices from other centers of power; whether scripturalist or otherwise normative and dominant. This book’s de-centering of English classifications goes beyond the remit of most postcolonial studies in that it explores the classifications used in a range of languages ― including Arabic; Sanskrit; Chinese; Greek and English ― to achieve a comparative survey of the roles of language and power in the making of ‘religion’ . In contextualizing these uses of language; the ten contributors explore how labels are either imposed or emerge interactively through discursive struggles between dominant and marginal groups. In dealing with the interplay of religion; language and power; there is no other book with the breadth of this volume.

It traces creeds; various counsels and synods; early debates; and development of what would become Christianity as recognized today. Each chapter ends with suggestions for further reading which is always a plus. One learns here that the true Christian has always endured severe persecution. Commentaries and other literature which are taken for granted in today’s world of information accessibility were brought to us through the pain of torture; the rack; the stake; drowning; strangulation; and many other unimaginable horrors. It is truly amazing what humans will do to other humans over differences in thought. Coming into the 20th century; the book’s treatment of Karl Barth is worthy of note. Barth paid dearly for his stand against Hitler and the Nazis. It is significant that Dietrich Bonhoeffer was a student of Barth’s. The book moves forward to the current state of postmodern culture. This book is an excellent source for the “evangelical” Christian of our day who desires to know how Christian thought arrived at where it is today.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. What emerges from the 500 pages of well managed material is a memorable account of the origins of the doctrines; denominations and beliefs that make up Christianity today. The authors effectively navigate the maze of differing ideas and interpretations with both sensitivity and clarity to provide a well ordered and understandable account of an otherwise endless subject.
