Objective analysisBy Mirza Yawar BaigI bought this book principally because I was looking for a book of history without the author's opinion of what he liked or didn't. This in my view is the principle benefit of the book - it talks about what happened and leaves you to come to your own conclusions. The other thing I liked is that he states what happened whether it reflects well or ill. If it happened it is here. I believe today that more and more history has the potential to teach us ways of navigating in a world that is apparently more and more bewildering. But that can happen only when we are able to see all of history. Not some sanitized or propagandized version of it. History that is written to tell a story according to a preset script is worthless to learn anything from. Sadly much of what goes in the name of Islamic history is of this nature. It glorifies some people; events and periods and either completely omits or glosses over others which are not seen as equally complementary. However it is for this very reason that the mistakes of a people are their best guide; but that is provided they have the integrity and moral courage to look at them objectively to draw lessons from. This is something that this book does admirably. I highly recommend this book especially to Muslims so that we can learn some very valuable and essential; albeit painful lessons.
