DOC Church History; Volume Two: From Pre-Reformation to the Present Day: The Rise and Growth of the Church in Its Cultural; Intellectual; and Political Context by John D. Woodbridge; Frank A. James III in History

Description

Combining documents with an interpretive essay; this book is the first to offer a much-needed guide to the emergence of the women's rights movement within the anti-slavery activism of the 1830s. A 60-page introductory essay traces the cause of women's rights from Angelina and Sarah Grimké's campaign against slavery through the development of a full-fledged women's rights movement in the 1840s and 1850s and the emergence of race as a divisive issue that finally split that movement in 1869. A rich collection of over 50 documents includes diary entries; letters; and speeches from the Grimkés; Maria Stewart; Lucretia Mott; Elizabeth Cady Stanton; Theodore Weld; Frances Harper; Sojourner Truth; and others; giving students immediate access to the world of abolitionists and women's right advocates and their passionate struggles for emancipation. Headnotes to the documents; 14 illustrations; a bibliography; questions to consider; a chronology; and an index are also included.

But the Reformation period is an important study to anyone; denominational or non-denominational; going through the "Pastoral Degree" coursework. Just as with world history; we need to learn from the mistakes of days gone by and; as well; closely examine our own weaknesses; and while the first in this series gave a good look at the Roman Empire's role; in particular the various emperors; this one shows in great detail the role of those within the church itself; the preachers and the theologians who shaped how we worship today and our understanding of the Bible. Not to mention this answers some of the urban myths that have cropped up recently regarding the formation and continuing debate over the canon of the Bible.2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. I also appreciate how he includes "marginalize" movements like the MoraviansBy CustomerI have been enjoying the reading of this book. It is written in a way to be readable for a Seminary community (me) as for an aficionado who likes history. The author brings a perspective in which we; as the church; can value our roots and see how God has been moving through history. I also appreciate how he includes "marginalize" movements like the Moravians; Puritists; Anabaptist or Methodists and explains their importance in shaping the Christian Thought. It is a book written to everybody by one of the brightest minds today.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful.
