As both a history buff and someone who loves to work with wood; this was a perfect fit. He has already made one project and is planning another. I didn't think this would be a good reading book; but would be a good book for learning how to build these items. Well I actually really enjoyed just reading it as a book; instead of just as an instruction manual. Everything is explained very well and clearly; with plenty of color photos; plenty of tips and tricks and just overall a really good read and quite educational as well! BurchfieldThe author spends the first 26 pages of this book advising the reader on how to achieve a period look using modern materials followed by chapters for each project. He even specifies likely used wood types and avoiding "modern" tool markings and includes pages to copy (I think you'll need to cut those pages out in order to do that) in order to make stencils for crates.There are a lot of photographs (including some Civil War originals- and some of reenactors- showing examples of the items) to show you what each project looked like or will look like as you construct it. You'll also find parts lists; diagrams and a lot of text taking you every step of the way.Personally- I want that desk!Some good ideas for projects here even if you don't want to reenact the Cicil War.
