Collaborating against Human Trafficking: Cross-Sector Challenges and Practices

PDF Collaborating against Human Trafficking: Cross-Sector Challenges and Practices by Kirsten Foot University of Washington in History

Description

This book consists of thirteen essays that deal with links between ecology and shamanism; landscape and nature spirit; emphasising web of meanings imbued in the cultural tradition of portraying landscape as temple and territory as archetypal representation of the cosmos. In view of appreciating the path in this direction paved by David Kinsley; this anthology is a memorial tribute to him by his students; friends; associates and admirers; including an essay that critically and rationally examined his contributions and their relevance today. Of course; there are books on the thematic or disciplinary-packed orientation; however rarely any interdisciplinary book that narrates many perspectives and facets around sacred geography of goddesses is published. This anthology fulfils that gap substantially; through the essays by scholars from religious studies; geography; anthropology and cultural studies. The themes covered include: sacred places; spatiality and symbolism; mental journeys and cosmic topography; illustrated with Sricakra and Sricakrapuja; pilgrimage sites in the Siwalik Region where landscape has played special role to awaken human mind; Pavagadh; where landscape helps to make the power of the Mother Goddess; spatial circulation in ritualscape of the matrikas in Kathmandu Valley; scenario at the Kamakhya Pitha; sacredscape and spatial structure of be-headed goddess at Rajarappa; sacred geography and formation of Vindhyachal goddess territory; Hindu Goddesses in Kashi: Spatial Patterns and Symbolic Orders; the ten Mahavidyas Yatra in making the goddess spirit invoked; role of Durga in the present sacredscape of Varanasi; issue of images and performances related to the river goddess Ganga; and Green Tara in the wall paintings of Alchi.

Covers necessary topics in the fight against Human TraffickingBy Rohan GulianiProfessor Foot’s book treads down a necessary path that is extremely important in an area as multidimensional and challenging as Human Trafficking. In the “Understanding and Combatting Human Trafficking” course that she taught at the University of Washington; the importance of cross-sector collaboration became quite clear; with many topics taken directly from this book. Professor Foot clearly illustrates why and where collaboration is needed and then lays out strategies that multiple sectors can take to better collaborate with the many other sectors involved with Human Trafficking. Sprinkled in with personal anecdotes that underlie the concepts extremely well; this book is a necessity for anyone wanting to make a real difference in the fight against Human Trafficking.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. She conducts her own research in multiple cities across the country; and presents in her book a very rare outlook on different problems with collaboration. For academics; students; and professionals trying to learn more about Human Trafficking; this is a new outlook on collaboration as she points out some surprising problems and difficulties with collaboration. She specifically mentions problems that arise when collaborating sectors have different beliefs; values; priorities; and power dynamics. Furthermore; she offers very realistic solutions in overcoming challenges when it comes to cross-sector collaboration; but also admits that there are some power dynamics that cannot be eliminated. Overall; Dr. Foot’s commitment to her research has allowed her to shine light on successful cross-sector partnerships to combat human trafficking.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. and values and how those interplay with collaboration makes this book a useful tool for collaborators outside of the anti-traffiBy BMoCollaborating Against Human Trafficking: Cross-Sector Challenges and Practices is an insightful book for those who are already familiar with terminology and arguments surrounding current anti-trafficking efforts and want to view the issue from the specific lens of collaboration. Although I believe that some previous knowledge of human trafficking is essential to fully appreciating this book; Foot’s analysis of power; beliefs; and values and how those interplay with collaboration makes this book a useful tool for collaborators outside of the anti-trafficking realm. Foot’s analysis of race and gender in multi-sector anti-trafficking efforts sets this book apart from not only other anti-trafficking books; but also other collaborative organizational books. After reading that portion of the book; I became more aware of how race and gender affect the way someone contributes or is allowed to contribute to a collaborative process. This book has prompted me to observe more keenly the dynamics that race and gender create in my own collaborative projects.
