Coming to America

DOC Coming to America by Roger Daniels in History

Description

These are the stories of the manitous--the spirits who inhabit the supernatural world of the Ojibway (the Native American tribe of the Great Lakes and central Canada region). Harvested by an eminent expert from an ancient oral tradition; these sacred stories introduce wily tricksters; fearsome giants; timorous tree spirits; seductive maidens; and wise grandmothers. Here; a coward masquerading as a hero becomes one; a powerful warrior is riled and routed by a younger sibling with a gift for dancing and disguises; and the ever-hungry evil weendigos--evil manitous--haunt the land. In spellbinding and hypnotic fashion; the creation and flood legends are told; and the origin stories of corn; spruce; and tobacco are revealed. Comic; erotic; dramatic; and tragic; these engrossing tales are a window into the heart of an ancient culture; an important contribution to Native American literature; and a fascinating source of spiritual guidance for the many followers of New Age mysticism.

EXCELLENT BOOK ON IMMIGRATIONBy T.ReyesThis book is a comprehensive study (515p.) of the different ethnic groups; that colonized America; and subsequent; immigration to America. The writing is a Sociological approach of the Subject of Immigration; It can answer; what ethnic groups; emigrated to America; and more important; what is their socioeconomic success; why the ethnic group; was successful and why not. This is a excellent book!My only complaint is that the book is outdated (wrote in 1990). I tried to find an updated book on Immigration with a writing; on a sociological approach; I didn't find one.recent books; I find with approach on Legislation or racial matter.I RECOMMEND this extraordinary book; to anybody interested on this SUBJECT; written on a Sociological approach; and a passion for reading books like me. .15 of 16 people found the following review helpful. Coming to AmericaBy CClavellThis is an extremely useful book for anyone who has an interest in the impact on immigrants upon U.S. history. This book gives capsule histories of most groups of immigrants to the United States. It also provides a very useful theoretical understanding of the reasons for immigration. Though it is particularly useful in its examination of the pre-colonial and colonial periods; it also (unlike many texts) includes a significant history of the pan-Caribbean slave trade; and the impact on the country as a whole of twenty percent of the population (at one time) being Africans or the children of Africans. I wish I had read it years ago; as I found my own family; immigrants from Krefeld; Germany; discussed here!Coming to America (Second Edition): A History of Immigration and Ethnicity in American Life0 of 0 people found the following review helpful.
