Conflict in Ukraine: The Unwinding of the Post--Cold War Order (Boston Review Originals)

DOC Conflict in Ukraine: The Unwinding of the Post--Cold War Order (Boston Review Originals) by Rajan Menon; Eugene B. Rumer in History

Description

This book presents the major teachings of Mahāyāna Buddhism in a precise; dramatic; and even humorous form. For two millennia this Sūtra; called the “jewel of the Mahāyāna Sūtras;” has enjoyed immense popularity among Mahāyāna Buddhists in India; central and southeast Asia; Japan; and especially China; where its incidents were the basis for a style in art and literature prevalent during several centuries. Robert Thurman’s translation makes available in relatively nontechnical English the Tibetan version of this key Buddhist scripture; previously known to the English-speaking world only through translations from Chinese texts. The Tibetan version is generally conceded to be more faithful to the original Sanskrit than are the Chinese texts. The Tibetan version also is clearer; richer; and more precise in its philosophical and psychological expression. The twelve books of the Sūtra are accompanied by an introduction and an epilogue by Dr. Thurman and by three glossaries: Sanskrit terms; numerical categories; and technical terms.

Unfortunately; most of the literature on the Russia-Ukraine conflict is not only biased and intellectually dishonest- but is also emotionally charged to the point it provides little value for the reader. This book is a very welcome exception from this trend. It provides a concise and informative analysis of how we got to this quagmire and a thoughtful analytical discussion on how it can develop further. The authors strive to be objective in their analysis and although not all will agree with them; all will gain new and valuable insights into the roots of the conflict.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. but more would have been better. That would make it easier to imagine Ukraine's changing geography throughout the ages that the book talks so much about. It can be somewhat of a task to use for a research paper (as I'm doing) since it's not entirely chronological in narrative. However; for the non-research paper writing/ academic reader; this is a great book to learn about Ukraine; and is much more than a just a superficial glimpse; it does get into the nuts and bolts a lot.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Great read; very applicableBy JettI had purchased this book for a critique I had to do for a history class I'm enrolled in; and I actually learned quite a but that went with our lectures. Though this book isn't conclusive (the authors note this in the introduction); it does very well to give the background to the larger issues that lead up to what has ultimately caused this crisis to reach its current level of concern for the future of the EU and Russia. I recommend this; especially if you're taking a class on European nationalism. You'll learn a lot.
