WilliamsCorinth; Mississippi was a strategic location of major importance during the Civil War yet the Siege of Corinth gets only a mention in most Civil War histories. The far better known Battle of Shiloh was a preemptive strike on Union troops massing to capture the railroad junction of Corinth. The “Siege of Corinth” that followed had very few casualties as Beauregard slipped away from the massive Army that Halleck amassed to surround him. Most deaths were from contaminated water and poor food rather than a battle that excited the imaginations of newspaper reporters and historians so the Siege of Corinth usually receives little coverage relative to its importance. Tim Smith; a former park staff member at the Shiloh Battle field; gives the Siege detailed coverage in about 100 pages of his 314 page book (excluding references; index; etc.) and the quality of his writing actually makes it interesting reading. The far bloodier Battle of Corinth and the nearby battle of Iuka are given excellent coverage in detail as well; as is the Union occupation of Corinth and its effect on the people of the town. This is a well-written; well-documented book that is easy to read. It does an excellent job of tying the events in Corinth into the political and military events going on in the rest of the Union and Confederacy. I recommend it for anyone interested in the Siege; Battle and Occupation of Corinth or the Battle of Iuka. Most Civil War History books are in need of maps. Tim Smith has eight diagrammatic maps that are a great help in understanding the text; which is many more than a lot of books have. However; at least eight more would have helped. I found myself on-line looking for towns mentioned in the text. This may not be the Author’s fault; maps are expensive and publishers are stingy. Still; although the number of maps is slightly less than adequate even this is a big improvement on most Civil War histories.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Good summary of battlesBy JonGood summary of Corinth battles that are often overlooked due to focus on more significant battles. Interesting focus on rail center that caused Corinth to be important. Seems to be a bit to polite about Hallicks skills or lack thereof.2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. As good as it gets...By Roger WallerWhile no one volume can ever fully encapsulate a Civil War battle or campaign but this volume by Timothy B. Smith would seem to come as close as it's possible to get. The writing is excellent. You can immediately feel the author's command of the subject. He has covered every square foot of ground and probably understands this campaign better than anyone. This is the cornerstone; single volume; work on this subject and is likely to remain so.
