D Day Then and NowBy AugsburgCertainly not an historical document breaking new theories but extremely well organized; fully documented; and great labeled photos. Great organizational and detailed view on D Day.Detailed and accurate study.1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Impressive; accurate and lavishly illustrated 2-volume setBy The GuardianThis two-hardcover-book set is a very high-quality and comprehensive history of the `Overlord' operation told by a number of informed contributors and edited together by Winston Ramsay. The planning and execution of this enormous operation is told in great detail and lavishly illustrated with hundreds of photographs; often contrasting the same location in June 1944 with a more contemporary picture from a similar view-angle.In total the two large volumes contain some 730 pages and more than 1;800 photographs around which the text is arranged. The narratives unfold more or less chronologically and by location; in an easy-to-follow style which covers all aspects of the operation from the command and control; the meticulous planning; the experiences recounted by veterans of individual units; the equipment and the engagements between the opposing forces.Photographic imagery dominates: the editor has obviously invested a huge amount of work and time into the selection and arrangement of all this material. If you are interested in learning more than a lightweight overview of this most important event in 20th century history which ultimately determined the shape of the global geopolitical map between 1945 and 1990; then it would be difficult to beat for sheer accuracy and detail. For any student of the military history of WW2; this set would be more or less indispensable. It's pricey; but you get a lot for your money; and a quality publication to own.10 of 10 people found the following review helpful. Great Opportunity to Acquire Both VolumesBy Kevin R. AustraYears ago; I bought both D-Day volumes separately. It is great to see that they are now offered as a box set. Not only is there a significant savings in buying the box set; it also allows you to obtain both books at the same time.D-DAY: THEN AND NOW upholds the tradition of the After the Battle THEN AND NOW series. The photo analysis and comparision with contemporary views are fantastic. Each photo; or series of photos; includes detailed captions. If Cornelius Ryan's THE LONGEST DAY is already in your collection; this set of comprehensive battlefield studies should be your second purchase. I only wish these volumes had been available when I toured the Normandy beaches in 1994. Now is your opportunity to get both books at once.
