James is a great writer speaking from extremely personal experiences in an effort to help other gay men navigate their own path of self discovery. J. James tells it like it is with brutal honesty and explicit details. There are many gay sexual encounters in this novel but it is so much more than a book about sexuality. The story line conveys great heartache and pain for both James and his family as they all try to come to terms with his gay reality. A wife torn; parents surprised; but supportive and relationships with men that range from casual encounters to true love and everything in between. There is a lot in this novel. I struggled to rate this book between four and five stars because while the explicit sexual scenes were a bit over the top for me personally; they were well written; and the emotion spilled out of the real life characters in this book. I realized rating it as four stars was not fair to the author as he has done an excellent job and telling a very difficult story. It's a five star book all gay men should read whether they are in denial; deceit or discovery.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. A Soul Searching Journey - MANY SPOILERSBy dadnallThis book is very much the story of the many men who were born in the 40's and 50's and 60's when it was essential to be in the closet. It also resulted in many of these men marrying women who were friends and who they might eventually love dearly; where they could be married; have children and sometimes sex which was generally disappointing. Eventually; there was a discovery that ended with the gay man realizing the he was gay. This would later result in him telling his wife that he was gay and causing both partners confusion; pain and fear. This book is the true story of one man's fight with being gay. He loved his wife; but there was nothing that he could do about the fact that he also yearned for men and found them in his life. The men he found were frequently one night stands and when they weren't; they were none that could form relations.Once Jack actually leaves his wife and finds a man that he feels he can have a relationship with; they take off for Bangkok where there is a lot of issues that come up that Jack must resolve to make himself happy. Thelast third of this book concerns how Jack stuggles and eventually thinks he is in a solid relationship.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. UnderstandingBy jasmine geikenDenial; Deceit; Discovery. Three things we all experience as part of the LGBT community at some point along our journey to acceptance of both ourselves and from others. The author contacted me on Twitter; and I had no clue what kind of book this was. Honestly had never heard of it before the encounter on social media. Taking the time to read it was anything but difficult as I became connected with the story within the first few sentences. As my experiences may not have been as eclectic or diverse as the story provides; I found the underlying lessons and principles to rival my own. From laughter to tears this book will allow those of us; whether just beginning our journey to the smooth sailing ending of finally living our lives as ourselves; to truly begin to understand that there are others out there who can relate. J.James has created a piece of literature that will continue to inspire and inform those in need as well as those who wish to be educated with the struggles of the LGBT community. Thank you for this.
