Destroyer Captain: Lessons of a First Command

audiobook Destroyer Captain: Lessons of a First Command by USN Adm. James Stavridis in History

Description

This is the story of the first jet versus jet war; the largest in number of victories and losses; and one of the few military bright spots in the Korean War. It tells how an outnumbered force of F-86 Sabres limited by range and restricted by the rules of engagement; decisively defeated its foe. Based on the latest scholarship; author Kenneth Werrell uses previously untapped sources and interviews with sixty former F-86 pilots to explore new aspects of the subject and shed light on controversies previously neglected. For example; he found much greater violation of the Yalu River than thus far has appeared in the published materials. The F-86 became a legend in "The Forgotten War" because of its performance and beauty; but most of all; because of its record in combat.

Destroyer Captain describes life on the USS Barry (DDG-52) in ...By Kindle CustomerDestroyer Captain describes life on the USS Barry (DDG-52) in the mid 1990's. It is based on the personal diary of the Commanding Officer at that time (then) CDR James Stavridis and shipboard activities are seen through his eyes. Taylor sailors will recognize the similarity between evolutions on the Barry and those on the Taylor 30-50 years earlier. The equipment may be modern; the crew may be from the next generation and the ocean may be the Atlantic; but the leadership and most of the operational issues are the same. Much has not changed. This book; published in 2008; is a page turner that will bring back memories.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Easy ReadBy GailkaIt was a good; easy read. I got an appreciation for how long a sea tour can be; which was more than two years in this case. I also got an appreciation for the complexities of operating naval ships close to each other; e.g. 100 ft when taking on supplies. I will read it again on the way to and from Austin.4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. This book was interesting but overall a disappointment. The author focuses on his social activities on shore; the novels he read on his cruise and expressing wonderful thoughts about his fellow officers. His time in command included a technical marvel of a ship; and participation in interesting international events; stormy weather; etc. but it is left to the reader to imagine the details. Patrick O'Brian's books provide a better view of the life a warship commander.
