No religion in the modern world is as feared and misunderstood as Islam. It haunts the popular imagination as an extreme faith that promotes terrorism; authoritarian government; female oppression; and civil war. In a vital revision of this narrow view of Islam and a distillation of years of thinking and writing about the subject; Karen Armstrong’s short history demonstrates that the world’s fastest-growing faith is a much more complex phenomenon than its modern fundamentalist strain might suggest.

HornbogenThis is an excellent reference book for those interested in ancient near east history. The articles have a lot of detail. Includes charts; pictures; references for further reading; and charts at the back listing rulers for Babylonia and Assyria. I recommend it to others who want a virtual encyclopedia in a book.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Great accompaniment when reading on the topic!By Ruth SanfordThis is so thorough! When reading texts on the ancient Near East; I occasionally come across terms I am not familiar with. I find this dictionary to be extremely handy when that happens.
