When the Legend Becomes Fact; Print the Legend...The Life of Robert Lee Scott; Jr.; Fighter Pilot!By Mike O'ConnorIn his almost 100-year lifetime; Robert L. Scott; Jr. was many things: an Eagle Scout; a West Point grad; an acclaimed national hero; a WWII fighter ace and leader; a best-selling author; noted speaker and the spark plug that helped create Georgia's Museum of Aviation. And; according to Robert Coram's illuminating and absolutely fascinating biography; Scott also flunked out of high school and was a shameless self-promoter and teller of tall tales who never let the truth get in the way of a good story; a serial womanizer and an absentee husband and father not to mention the fact that; though he made general; he played fast and loose with USAF rules and regs and had financial troubles throughout his life. Scott's complicated and complex life is brought to vivid life in DOUBLE ACE; THE LIFE OF ROBERT LEE SCOTT JR.. a 2016 St. Martin's Press release.Scott's troubles originated with his mother; who lived out her frustrated dreams through her first born. If Ola Burckhalter Scott couldn't achieve greatness; her favorite child; the center of her world; could - and would - under her endless poking and prodding. It was 'Mama' who set her first born on his life's course. After witnessing a a demonstration flight by Eugene Ely on 19 October 1911 - a flight that ended in Ely's death! - Scott's mother told Robert Lee was going to grow up to be not just an aviator but an aviator as famous as Ely. The die was cast and after barely eking through West Point - he was 257th in a class of 262 - he embarked on an Army Air Corps career Scott was determined to become a fighter pilot but he spent his early days flying the U.S. Mail before being assigned to the Panama Canal Zone flying Boeing P-12s. He married in September 1934 but his wife - and later; his daughter - wouldn't see much of him; flying was his consuming passion. In June 1937 he reported to Randolph Field as an instructor; a posting that he saw as evidence that other Air Force officers were conspiring to keep him out of fighters. Future postings frustratingly kept him in Training Command until; after war's outbreak; he fast-talked his way into Task Force Aquila; a top-secret Air Force project to bomb Japan with B-17s based in China. By the time Aquila fizzled out; the B-17s were in Karachi. Scott then hooked up with the Assam-Burma-China Ferry Command; flying supplies over the Hump in C-47s. The ABC Command had several Republic P-43s and Curtiss P-40s on hand. Ever the fighter; Scott appropriated the fighters and began flying unauthorized combat missions. His exploits brought him to the attention of the AVG commander; Colonel Claire Chennault; and the rest; as they say; is history.DOUBLE ACE is not just a compelling; warts-and-all examination of one of the most famous Air Force pilots of WWII or ever. In relating Scott's WWII exploits; Coram also interweaves the story of Claire Chennault and his championing of fighter aviation stateside and his subsequent combat career in the CBI Theater. Further; Coram details the political intrigues that plagued the Allied effort in China involving AAF brass; General Stillwelll; Chennault; Chiang Kai-shek and his wife.In short; the life of Robert L. Scott is a real-life tall tale skillfully untangled by Coram. In the end; whatever the man's shortcomings; Robert L. Scott will be remembered as an inspiration to countless young Americans who; after reading of his exploits in GOD IS MY CO-PILOT; aspired to a military flying career. DOUBLE ACE is a great read. Buy it. Highly recommended.*****9;900 Helpful Votes!0 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Five StarsBy Teresa KnightFor my Dad
