Buddhism is a religion which must be viewed from many angles. Its original form; as preached by Gautama in India and developed in the early years succeeding; and as embodied in the sacred literature of early Buddhism; is not representative of the actual Buddhism of any land today. The faithful student of Buddhist literature would be as far removed from understanding the working activities of a busy center of Buddhism in Burmah; Tibet or China today as a student of patristic literature would be from appreciating the Christian life of London or New York City. This volume is the third to be published of a series on "The World's Living Religions;" projected in 1920 by the Board of Missionary Preparation of the Foreign Missions Conference of North America. The series seeks to introduce Western readers to the real religious life of each great national area of the non-Christian world.

Very Highly Recommended History of the Last Colonial ConflictBy A Florida ReaderThis is a rather serious and detailed look at the events leading up to what is known as Lord Dunmore's War as well as the events that transpired during that conflict. The book is not a casual popular narrative history but instead going into much detail concerning the situation on the colonial frontier prior to the breakout of open fighting and then of the operations in the war and the aftermath. It is a shame that there is no preview of the book as the author presents in an excellent introduction his aiming in writing the book. Those aims include providing new insight into the causes of conflict which the author shows; by use of much primary source material; that the war was not instigated by a simple land grab as has been often cited in many histories of the conflict. The author also takes a detailed (there's that word again!) look at the structure of the Virginia militia; including the legal basis of its existence as well as the actual effectiveness of the implementation of the activation of the militia. There are a number of maps in the book and a quite extensive set of endnotes. I highly recommend this book to anyone who has a serious interest in the colonial period; especially in the time right before the outbreak of the War of Independence.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful.
