Eastern Europe in the Twentieth Century – And After

PDF Eastern Europe in the Twentieth Century – And After by R. J. Crampton in History

Description

If the Western world knows anything about Zen Buddhism; it is down to the efforts of one remarkable man; D.T. Suzuki. The twenty-seven year-old Japanese scholar first visited the West in 1897; and over the course of the next seventy years became the world's leading authority on Zen. His radical and penetrating insights earned him many disciples; from Carl Jung to Allen Ginsberg; from Thomas Merton to John Cage. In Mysticism: Christian and Buddhist Suzuki compares the teachings of the great Christian mystic Meister Eckhart with the spiritual wisdom of Shin and Zen Buddhism. By juxtaposing cultures that seem to be radically opposed; Suzuki raises one of the fundamental questions of human experience: at the limits of our understanding is there an experience that is universal to all humanity? Mysticism: Christian and Buddhist is a book that challenges and inspires; it will benefit readers of all religions who seek to understand something of the nature of spiritual life.

CoeThis volume is the most comprehensive and detailed analysis of the turmoil and disruptions in the culture of eastern Europe. The work is well documented and written with clarity and accuracy.3 of 6 people found the following review helpful. Good on tiny details not so hot on the big picture.By Maureen O'GormanIf; like me; you are no expert on Eastern Europe; then this book is reassuring in that it proves someone out there is. However it really does nothing to help weave a broad picture for the reader or to explain well the context surrrounding the events. I certainly felt less confident about my knowledge of the region after reading it than before. There could be more overview and less detail and this book would not have suffered for it.1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. RecommendedBy Chris KostovThere aren't many quality books on the contemporary history of Eastern Europe. Crampton's book is one of the nice exceptions. It is one of the best books on the matter with a lot of curious details on all the countries in the region. I personally use this book as the main text of all my university courses on Eastern/Central Europe and the Cold War. The only shortcoming I can think of is the lack of information on the communist concentration camps in Eastern Europe and their victims.
