This book makes it very clear that we used to have decent; thoughtful politicians.By EvelynEisenhower wasn't perfect; and this book details his missteps as clearly as it details his triumphs; but it is stunning to read about the basic decency of this man when compared to politicians today of both parties. Did he screw up in the African campaigns? Yes; and in some of the planning for D-Day; and in misreading and miscalculating in Iran. Did he have an affair with Ms. Summersby? Yes; most probably. But he was also dedicated to his country and fought for its principles - like free speech for those with whom he disagreed. I can't think of many better ways of illustrating the decline of the USA than in comparing Eisenhower to our current "president".I was especially taken with the narrative of his rise through the ranks; helped often by those who recognized his abilities; and the depth of his experiences. My only disappointment with the book was the covering of his life after the presidency; I would have liked to know more about what his day-to-day life had been like; what his thoughts were on how the country was progressing. But on the whole; I found this book to be some solace for the heartbreak of today's politics.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. A Fine Comprehensive BiographyBy RickA good accounting of the successes and failures of one of America's more influential persons of recent history. It makes one pine for a time when the American political process functioned at a more reasonable level. How can current statesman face the problems of Eisenhower's life experiences?0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Well written and fascinating to learn all about someone who was so important to us without glorifying himBy Jay CThis book gives you all the details of a very compelling man who was so instrumental in many significant developments in the first half of the 20th century. It gives a great perspective on the man from him childhood though college through significant military experience all the way to the presidency.
