Ellet's Brigade: The Strangest Outfit of All

ebooks Ellet's Brigade: The Strangest Outfit of All by Chester G. Hearn in History

Description

The Haitian Revolution began in 1791 as a slave revolt on the French colonial island of Saint Domingue and ended thirteen years later with the founding of an independent black republic. Waves of French West Indians -- slaves; white colonists; and free blacks -- fled the upheaval and flooded southern U.S. ports -- most notably New Orleans -- bringing with them everything from French opera to voodoo. Alfred N. Hunt discusses the ways these immigrants affected southern agriculture; architecture; language; politics; medicine; religion; and the arts. He also considers how the events in Haiti influenced the American slavery-emancipation debate and spurred developments in black militancy and Pan-Africanism in the United States. By effecting the development of racial ideology in antebellum America; Hunt concludes; the Haitian Revolution was a major contributing factor to the attitudes that led to the Civil War.

Review
1 of 3 people found the following review helpful. A Piece of Family HistoryBy Richard BloomerThis review is not about style or writing ability. It is simply about the fact that my Great Grandfather served in the Mississippi Marine Brigade and then in the 9th Marines; prior to ending up in the Indiana Volunter Infantry as a part of the Army of Cumberland. I had wondered about this for years. Was my Great Grandfather a leatherneck? Why would he travel from Northern Ohio to St. Louis to join the fight? What made this outfit different from the units his brothers joined in Ohio and Michigan? Why was he issued tools to build barracks at Vicksburg? This is a facinating story of a little-known unit that eventually became the forerunner of the task-organized special forces units of today. It's not just about Ellet and his vision; it tells me something about my forefather.0 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Five StarsBy William A.
