Evagrius Ponticus: The Praktikos. Chapters on Prayer (Cistercian Studies)

ebooks Evagrius Ponticus: The Praktikos. Chapters on Prayer (Cistercian Studies) by Evagrius Ponticus in History

Description

Not strictly a military history; Ben Wynne examines in this book the social components of Confederate service in the context of the experiences of a single regiment. Using first person accounts from letters; diaries; memoirs and other primary materials; the book sets the 15th Mississippi in a personal context. The narrative is chronologically arranged by the events of the western theater of the Civil War. Emphasizing the real war and not a romanticized version; the story of this unique regiment follows a group of men who entered the war with visions of glory and honor but within one year came to recognize the true nature of the conflict.

As a clinical psychologist and amateur student of patristic literature; I found the Prakticos and the Chapters on Prayer totally on target. This is probably the best book to start with for the amateur Evagrian. There are many others that could be recommended. Evagrian study is growing and I believe we can look forward to an excellent conversation on the immediate relevance of this amazing spiritual giant.7 of 7 people found the following review helpful. InterestingBy AlbertoUseful and well discussed book about two of the more interesting and well-known works by Evagrius Ponticus. The discussion is well presented; concise but not superficial. The book can be an useful starting point for all those readers who have an interest in the Desert Father. Unfortunately; there are not references to the source material nor any analysis of the original text.Overall; I enjoyed reading this work.4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. RewardingBy Pat OWhile this book is not the easiest read....written in what I call a very scholarly manner (which is a good thing)....I found myself becoming more a student of the notes than I wanted to be. The teachings are helpful and inspiring. Much appreciated.
