ePub Faith and Politics: How the "Moral Values" Debate Divides America and How to Move Forward Together by Senator John Danforth in History

Description

Called “everything a twentieth century war memoir could possibly be” by The New York Times; this national bestseller by Colonel David H. Hackworth presents a vivid and powerful portrait of a life of patriotism. From age fifteen to forty David Hackworth devoted himself to the US Army and fast became a living legend. In 1971; however; he appeared on television to decry the doomed war effort in Vietnam. With About Face; he has written what many Vietnam veterans have called the most important book of their generation. From Korea to Berlin; from the Cuban missile crisis to Vietnam; Hackworth’s story is that of an exemplary patriot; played out against the backdrop of the changing fortunes of America and the American military. It is also a stunning indictment of the Pentagon’s fundamental misunderstanding of the Vietnam conflict and of the bureaucracy of self-interest that fueled the war.

This group is composed of Liberals; Independents and Conservatives; and I think everyone except the most conservative of the Conservatives enjoyed it. Danforth is a moderate republican and it is very interesting to read what he says was his motivation behind his decisions as the Missouri AG and his political stance as a Senator. He is very candid about his political career; probably more so than most politicians. I think he describes how our current political climate came to be quite well; which does happen to agree with the latest poly-sci classes I have taken.2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. "Faith and Politics" by John DanforthBy Karen J. BostonAs a life long resident of the St. Louis area; I have known of and voted for John Danforth. He is a man of character and conviction. I purchased his book for a Christmas gift for my son; who; upon reading it; said that he enjoyed it very much. We both bemoaned the fact that Mr. Danforth is no longer in public life. It seems there are few; if any; of his mettle serving this nation today. This is the work of an intelligent; educated; reasonable man. His work is clearly written and his views are simply but cogently presented. I heartily recommend it...as does my son.2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Faith and PoliticsBy mibeerladyThis book presents a balanced view of the interaction between conservative; right wing Christianityand the real world. The Senator explains why it is wrong for our government to attempt to direct ourreligious life; but it is just as wrong for the religious right to assume infallibility and attempt todirect our government.
